Let’s face it: the internet is full of travel advice. While that can be helpful, it can also be a lot. If you’ve ever fallen into the rabbit hole of trying to plan a dream trip to Lapland, you’re not alone.
Finland is a breathtaking destination year-round, but Lapland truly shines in winter. With snowy landscapes, Northern Lights, cozy cabins, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, it’s no wonder winter is the busiest season up north. That said, planning a trip there isn’t always straightforward — Lapland is a vast region with many different areas, each offering unique vibes, activities, and accommodations.
So, where should you begin? Here's a simple guide to help you get started:
1. Choose Your Timing
First things first: when do you want to go?
Different months offer different experiences, and certain destinations are better suited to specific times of year. Want to soak in the magical Christmas atmosphere? December is your month—but be prepared for crowds and peak pricing. If you prefer a quieter experience with the same snowy magic, consider visiting later in the spring.
2. List Your Must-Do Activities
Think about what experiences are non-negotiable for you. Dreaming of a husky safari? Sleeping under the Northern Lights? Meeting Santa? Your activity wishlist will help narrow down the best location and time to go.
3. Define Your Accommodation Style
Are you picturing a luxurious glass igloo or a cozy log cabin deep in the forest? Maybe a family-friendly apartment in a small town? Take the time to list out what kind of place you'd love to stay in—and weigh the pros and cons based on comfort, budget, and location.
4. Figure Out the Logistics
Once you've picked your time, destination, and accommodation, it’s time to sort out the travel details. Which airport should you fly into? Do you need a rental car? Will you rely on taxis or public transport? These choices will affect your overall experience (and stress levels), so it’s worth planning ahead.
5. Add One Unexpected Experience
This is my personal travel rule: always include one activity you’ve never done before. Whether it's ice floating, a reindeer yoga session, or snowshoeing under the moonlight—it’s these moments that make your trip unforgettable.
